I. Love. This. Pen. No really… we’re talking true love here!
You know that moment when you open the package of a new set of
First of all, let’s just clear up the obvious, ok? I own a lot of
One of the things I love about this pen is that it’s got a bit of heft to the barrel. It’s smooth and feels good in my hand, but the tiny bit of extra weight makes it feel solid, not plasticky or cheap at all. The pen tip is steel and feels substantial under the weight of my heavy-handed writing. Plus no feathering or bleed-through on the paper I used here.
But the ink! C’mon… let’s talk about the ink. This is gel ink, so you already know it’s going to be smooth and lay on the page beautifully. But this ink feels different than normal gel ink, for some reason. It’s probably the fact that’ it’s Hi-Tec-C ink (more on that in a moment). This pack comes with 12 colors in the group. Just ignore the colors I wrote in the pen test above… the official names of the colors are:
- Red
- Cherry Pink
- Baby Pink
- Orange
- Apricot Orange
- Green
- Aqua Blue
- Blue
- Blue Black
- Violet
- Brown
- Black

Do you know about the Hi-Tec C ink? It was first launched in Japan (the world capital of stationery supplies – we love Japan for their love of stationery) in 1994 and is some of the best gel ink in
Pilot uses ink made of a special biopolymer consisting of resin made from microbes such as yeast. As a result, the ink’s viscosity is increased, which prevents it from feathering or bleeding. Since Hi-Tec-C’s 1994 launch in Japan, it has been a pioneer of gel ink pen innovation. Various iterations and colors have emerged, and it even won the Good Design Long Life Design Award in 2012.

The tip on these
OK – have I raved enough about these
Do these pens have little … um … places to hook something on? It looks like they do, on the photo. Is that on the pen cap, or the body of the pen? Can they all be tied together, like a big ring of pens?
sbpoet – yes, there’s a very small hole in the pen cap where you could attach a charm or string them through some type of bungee cord to keep them all together. Great idea!
I bought these pens after reading this review. I love them. Thank you.
Angela: Those pens are such a dream! Glad you love them too.
Is the ink permanent in your opinion? i.e. if write something and it dries, then if water splashes on the page, once that water is dry will I be able to read what I wrote?
Yes, it is. I use this pen as my daily writer and when a task is completed on my list, I highlight over it to show it’s done. I never have any smudging or smearing at all – not even when I highlight immediately after I write.
HI-TEC-C (no maica) were my go to pen until I started using the UM-151. Yes the Uniball is more (more) smudge prone, but the Pental had a tendency to need some coaxing (scribbling) before the writting was as effortless as it was designed to be. That was over a decade ago. Does the HI-TEC-C MAICA suffer from this afflection?
Can you buy these pens in Canada? I checked the walmart website and the price is unavailable. Is there anywhere else you can get them thats reliable?
I was distraught when they discontinued these pens. 😭 Stationary nerd – can you recommend a replacement? Super fine, no bleed… 🙏🏻
Looks like JetPens still has some Pilot High Tec pens available. Hope this helps! I just really love JetPens. <3 https://www.jetpens.com/search?q=pens+pilot+high-tec&v=2&f=4e2c4217acc2b59f
